How I’m Helping My Mom with Her Eras Tour Outfit

Welcome to “How Mini?”: the fashion advice blog in which I pull from real conversations with friends asking for my advice on where to find a particular piece, how to style a certain outfit, or what my take is on a red carpet look - and I give an answer. Who knows? You might just be asking the same questions! It isn’t easy being the token stylist friend - but someone’s got to do it! You say skirt I say, “how mini?”

This summer, my parents, my best friend, her boyfriend, and I are heading to Germany to catch the European leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour—yes, we are those kinds of Swifties (and very fortunate ones, at that).

Fans of Ms. Swift know that an essential part of the planning process when attending le tour of the century, is choosing an era to dress in.

My mom, who happened to graduate college in 1989, just scored a sky blue maxi skirt with a mesh rhinestone overlay by Wayf (reminiscent of this dress from the same brand) at T.J. Maxx, our holy grail of eternal scores. During a FaceTime with her, live from our local T.J.’s, she asked me to put together a 1989 mood board for her to style the skirt. I thought you’d never ask, mom!

My mom has an adorable blonde lob (long bob), so her hairstyle is turn-key for achieving an almost copycat look. She has great style, too, so I can turn her loose after showing her this Pinterest board and her wheels are sure to start turning. But, to start her off with some inspo - or anyone looking to achieve the 1989 lewk for that matter, I’ve rounded up a few pieces to help complete the look.

For a 3-hour show in which sitting will likely not be the way you spend most of your night, take a page out of 1989 Taylor’s Version Taylor’s book and opt for a sandal, like this one.

Perhaps the most classic of 1989 accessories: the white horn rimmed glasses.

A friendly reminder: tour tickets are not prerequisites to dressing up in your best eras-inspired looks. Throw a party! Go out on the town channeling your inner Reputation era! Stream the concert movie in your pajamas! Make Mother proud.
